As a sensual (erotic) masseuse, I truly believe that every woman can benefit from sensual massage sexually, spiritually, and psychologically.
TOTAL CONTRAINDICATIONS
However, responsible massage therapists know there are some medical conditions that make any full-body massage a high-risk activity for some individuals. These include people with:
- High temperature of fever.
- Any infectious condition or disease.
- Skin infection anywhere, including scalp infections (nits, lice, etc.).
- Serious heart condition or circulatory disorder.
- Recent stroke, haemorrhage, or blood clot.
- Recent, unhealed injury, including from an operation/surgery.
- Pregnancy (first trimester) or possible/suspected pregnancy.
- Under the influence of drugs or heavy alcohol. (Having a small, responsible drink to calm your nerves just before the massage is fine.)
- Diarrhoea and/or vomiting.
- Active cancer being treated with chemotherapy
and/or radiotherapy.
If a prospective client reports one of these conditions at the time of the booking or the massage, I’m professionally obligated to let her know I can’t offer my services.
Possible contraindications
Other conditions create a grey area. Women with these conditions should get a doctor’s permission before receiving any kind of full-body massage. (No need to get specific and tell them you’re considering a sexual massage if that feels like oversharing. The contraindications for sensual massage are the same as for a typical, therapeutic Swedish full-body massage.) These conditions are:
- Cardiovascular conditions, including thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, and hypotension.
- Minor heart conditions.
- Haemophilia.
- Medical oedema.
- Recent head or neck injury, including whiplash.
- Fractures or sprains of the legs, arms, hands, or feet.
- Recent operation/surgery.
- Epilepsy.
- Asthma.
- Diabetes.
- Osteoporosis.
- Spondylitis.
- Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
- Undiagnosed lumps/bumps/swellings – even if they’re not painful.
- Recent, severe, and undiagnosed headaches or migraines.
- Paranoia, psychosis, or schizophrenia.
- Very high or very low blood pressure.
- Cancer (in remission), if you’re still experiencing discomfort or
side effects from treatments. - Central nervous system disorders, including cerebral palsy, multiple
sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. - Pregnancy (second or third trimester) or pregnancy-related
disorder. - Trapped, pinched, or inflamed nerve.
- Kidney infection.
- Slipped or herniated disc.
Localised contraindications
Finally, there are some conditions that affect only a small area of the body but are still relevant to massage. You’ll want to let a massage therapist know about these so they can make adjustments to the massage and take any other precautions. These include:
- Minor wounds, including bruises, cuts, or abrasions.
- Recent (or sensitive) scar tissue.
- Localised swelling or inflammation.
- Varicose veins.
- Sunburn.
- Hypersensitive skin.
- Menstruation. (Yes, I offer period massages!)
- Allergies.
Ready?
If you’ve cleared all these contraindication hurdles, you’re ready for a sensual massage! Book one with me here.
If one of the acute contraindications applies to you, you’ll likely be in the clear for a sensual massage once your condition resolves.
If one of the longer-lasting conditions applies to you, finding a safe sensual massage provider may prove challenging. However, there may be therapeutic (that is, non-sexual) massage professionals who specialise in serving individuals with your condition. Some are even certified in, for example, pregnancy massage or cancer/oncology massage.
